The subtitle of BETWEEN SUMMER'S LONGING AND WINTER'S END (Pantheon, $27.95) gives fair notice that Leif GW Persson's political thriller, the first book in an ambitious trilogy by this Swedish author, is "The Story of a Crime." But that won't stop anyone from diving into it in hopes of discovering the next best thing to Stieg Larsson's addictive Millennium trilogy. So let's dispense with that pipe dream right away. In "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and two subsequent novels featuring his implacable avenger-heroine, Lisbeth Salander, Larsson piles on horrific acts of violence against women to make a larger point about systemic corruption in the body politic, shock imagery that becomes his idiom for exposing the hypocrisy of a government that ignores the internal criminal abuses threatening its progressive social system. Persson is no less concerned with this corruption, but since he doesn't write in the same melodramatic fashion, there are no symbolic acts of sadism or archetypal figures in his novel. Rather, the political crime on which the plot turns - the 1986 assassination of Sweden's prime minister, Olof Palme, by a killer who has never been found - is as real as it gets in crime fiction. And while Persson draws a fanciful pair of horns on the fictional architect of the murder (as does Larsson), he's quite blunt and specific in his brief: the lazy, stupid, bigoted, greedy, corrupt idiots in Sweden's bloated and ineffectual secret security police are the true culprits in this traumatizing crime, which rattles the national psyche to this day. The far-reaching back story that eventually delivers the prime minister into the hands of his killer begins with a shoddy police investigation into the apparent suicide of an American student who came to Stockholm to research his uncle's activities as a C.I.A. agent in the 1940s. One skeptical police officer manages to keep the case open, but he's a laconic chap, not the sort you'd want to follow to the ends of the earth. On a more fundamental level, the format of the police procedural can't support the elaborate plot mechanism Persson engineers to expose the layers of incompetence and venality in postwar Sweden's secret-intelligence services. With dozens of unremarkable characters to account for and mountains of missteps to track, the plot thins out to a point where only die-hard conspiracy theorists could keep faith with it. Persson's speculative solution to this political mystery shows a dark imagination, but with the complicity of his translator, Paul Norlen, he also makes it seem surprisingly dull. Although a shared latitude makes them almost neighbors, Sweden and Iceland might as well be on different planets - at least when it comes to the crime fiction of Arnaldur Indridason, who's more interested in the dour nature of his Icelandic countrymen than he is in their politics. In HYPOTHERMIA (Thomas Dunne/ Minotaur, $24.99), the thoughts of his moody detective, Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson, once again turn to suicide. "A terribly quiet - almost polite - death," he reflects when he sees a woman with a history of depression hanging from a beam in her living room. Erlendur's excuse for opening an investigation into this seemingly routine case (his second suicide call in a week) is a "comprehensive study" being conducted by collaborating Nordic countries. But the truth is, this humane detective simply needs to understand what makes people choose such a lonely death. That curiosity, as well as his fixation with missing persons, inevitably stirs guilty memories of his brother, who disappeared in a blizzard, a tragedy that still chills Erlendur to the bone but has made him a sensitive witness to the suffering of lost souls. Billy Boyle is no fool. This brash young Irish-American, a cop back home in Boston, knows he'd be just another "dime-a-dozen lieutenant" if his Uncle Ike hadn't made him a personal wingman. But Billy has learned how to play that all-American-boy persona in James R. "Uncle Ike" (aka General Eisenhower) personally pins silver first lieutenant bars on Billy Boyle in Benn's stellar fifth WWII mystery (after 2009's Evil for Evil). In December 1943, Billy's leave with his British girlfriend in Italy is cut short. Orders send him to London to look into a Soviet officer's shooting murder, which may be retaliation for the execution of thousands of Polish officers in the Katyn Forest that's been blamed on the Germans but probably was committed by Russians. Since the Soviets are allies, the investigation requires the utmost sensitivity. Billy's loyalties are tested because his friend who works for the Polish government in exile, Lieutenant Kazimierz, is a prime suspect. Benn excels at depicting the impact of war on London-the bricks from bombed buildings piled neatly on the streets, families living in Tube stations, "the odor of the Blitz." Billy Boyle, special investigator with General Eisenhower's staff, is not nearly as naive as he was at the beginning of World War II. So when he's assigned to find the murderer of a Russian security officer in London during the buildup to D-Day, he recognizes that the stability of the Allied operation could hinge on this politically charged case. The Polish contingent, including Billy's chum, Lieutenant Kaz Kazmierz, is incensed over evidence that implicates the Russians in the murder of hundreds of Polish prisoners in the so-called Katyn Massacre, while the Allies needing to keep the goodwill of the Soviets are content with blaming the Nazis for the killings. Could Kaz have killed the Russian as partial payback? The British investigators think so, but Billy doesn't buy it. Benn shrewdly combines the political cat-and-mouse game with the murder investigation, offering a fascinating glimpse of the wartime intelligence world (Allies spying on Allies) and how it laid the groundwork for the Cold War. In addition, his portrayals of the invdividual lives affected by the global machinations reflect an almost Graham Greene-like feel for nuance.
